Domestic Violence and Order of Protection: What you Need to Know

Domestic violence is a harsh reality for families everywhere. This reality has become even more prevalent in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic which has made it more difficult than ever for victims to escape from their abusers. Domestic violence survivors, usually women and children, often cannot find an escape from chaos and fear of abuse that permeates every aspect of their lives. This is why it is vital that each of us knows the process for helping domestic violence survivors find the safety that they need through an Order of Protection.

Missouri Orders of Protection are available to adult and child victims of domestic violence and stalking. While it is not difficult to apply for an Order of Protection, it is always best to consult with a top attorney to give an abuse survivor the best chance at getting the protection they need. Survivors often get immediate protection from the Courts within hours of applying for their Order of Protection. After a hearing, a Judge can tailor an Order of Protection to the unique needs of each survivor, ordering the accused to stay away from the home and work of the survivor, as well as provide financial assistance. In some cases, an accused abuser can even lose the right to own weapons while an Order of Protection is in effect. Orders of protection can be life changing for a family in the grips of domestic violence, but too often, domestic violence survivors do not know the best way to get the protection they need.

To that end, our office has partnered with ALIVE (Alternatives to Living in Violent Environment) to offer an informative webinar to demystify the legal process of how to actually obtain an Order of Protection. All proceeds raised for this Webinar will be  donated to ALIVE to assist them directly in continuing the life-saving work they do. This live webinar will be held on April 22, 2021 from 5:00-6:00pm Central Time and has been approved for 1.2 Missouri Bar CLEs and is pending approval of CEUs for Mental Health Professionals from Illinois.
